The Department of Comparative Human Development at the University of
Chicago invites applications for a two-year appointment as a Mellon
Postdoctoral Fellow at the rank of Instructor in research areas related
to immigration, minority group status and the multicultural challenge in
liberal democracies. Prospective fellows should be engaged in research
concerned with developmental challenges faced by immigrant and minority
group populations in the United States and other liberal democracies
with an eye on documenting and theorizing the scope and limits of
toleration for ethnic, cultural and religious diversity. Recipients of
these Postdoctoral Fellowships must have received their doctorates
within five academic years previous to the year of award. Persons
holding tenure-track appointments are not eligible to apply. Fellows
will teach two courses a year of their own devising at the undergraduate
or early graduate level and attend The Comparative Human Development
Workshop. Fellows are expected to use their remaining time for research,
during which period they should prepare dissertation research for final
publication and begin new research beyond the dissertation. Application

Dear Colleagues,
Many of you already know me; for the others, let me very briefly introduce myself.
My name is Marco Armiero and I am an environmental historian. In the last few years I have been working on the relationships between migration and the environment. Although human mobility has been a major force in shaping the face of the earth, the environmental aspects of mass migrations are usually neglected.
I am writing to all of you because I would like to propose an idea. Let me say from the beginning that this is just an idea which needs to be discussed, improved, and shaped in our common discussions. My proposal is to build a network of scholars interested in the study of the connections between modern migrations and the environment.
I am creating a website (since it is not my field, my work will be very basic) which could become the common platform for this group. The website EMiGR (Environment and Migration Group of Research) should include: short bios of the participants in the network, CFPs, working papers, a list of publications, links, and sources. Hopefully, this website would be the starting point for some common projects such as workshops, conferences, research projects, and publications.
I am aware that all of you are very busy, and, therefore, I would like to be as clear as possible about what I am looking for in terms of participation. Obviously it is essentially your choice as to how much you will contribute to the website. What I need to build the network is your membership in this network, which implies that I can put your name, email, and a short presentation of your interests on migration and the environment on the website. You may wish to use the website to publish working papers, articles, lectures, CFPs, or other materials. I also welcome any and all suggestions for building and improving this website, including links to sources, research centers, and other professional contacts.
I think that this website could become a point of reference for those who want to study the environmental history of migrations. It has the potential of becoming an excellent tool for further developments; for instance, we might organize a workshop on migration and the environment and use that as the starting point for a collective publication. I believe that our group might also submit grant proposals on this subject.
I hope that I have sparked your interest in my proposal. I also hope you will feel free to give me your opinions and suggestions about the idea.

This volume is intended to be the first of an annual series, which will aim to provide the reader with regularly-updated qualitative assessments on the changing nature and dynamics of environmental migration throughout the world. The idea for it stemmed from the course «Environment and Migration», taught at the Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA) of Sciences Po. The course, which is thought to be the first of its kind in the world, examines the complex relationship between environmental change and migration flows. For their final assignment, students were asked to select and analyse a case of environmental migration, be it a sudden and violent natural disaster or a slow-onset environmental degradation. The best of these papers have been selected and edited, and are presented in this volume. Most of them constitute the first detailed analyses of the migration flows that were induced by some of the most dramatic events of 2010, paving the way for future scholarly works.

Migration Museum Project: 100 Images of Migration Competition
The Migration Museum Project is an exciting venture with aims to
establish a new national Migration Museum in the UK.
In conjunction with the Guardian newspaper, it is running a "100
Images of Migration" competition. Participants are invited to
upload images resonant of migration with a short explanation of what
the image means to them. Images can feature something very personal
like an object brought to the UK or something in the public domain
like a bank note printed on Huguenot Portal family paper. Or anything
else that speaks of migration.
Photographs, paintings, collages, or any other kind of image is
welcome. A selection of winning entries will feature in Guardian
Weekend magazine.
